He made an inferno out of an anthill - and he'll have to pay for it.

Authorities in west-central Michigan say a man tried to burn an anthill the other day.

He did - but also set fire to about an acre of land along with the anthill.

The Daily News of Greenville says the fire was set Tuesday afternoon in Lakeview, about 40 miles north-northeast of Grand Rapids and the flames spread quickly to a nearby wooded area.

It took firefighters about an hour to put out the blaze.

The fire chief says the man who started the fire will be billed for the cost of sending firefighters to the scene.

No word about the fate of the ants.
