Rendell calls emergency budget meeting

HARRISBURG, Pa. - June 15, 2009 - /*Rendell*/'s top aides were summoned in a memo sent Friday by his chief of staff, Steve Crawford, to attend the special closed-door meeting on Wednesday.

The state is facing a $3.2 billion revenue shortfall for the budget year that ends June 30, and many are bracing for a protracted budget fight as the deadline nears.

Rendell is expected to soon lay out several hundred million dollars' worth of additional budget cuts to the spending plan he announced in February.

Republicans that control the state Senate say they'd rather cut spending than pass any tax increases.
