Mrs. Fixit: Mulch Know How

July 04, 2009

Mulch keeps weeds in check and reduces the need to water because it slows the evaporation of water from the surface of the soil.

If you choose an organic mulch, like shredded tree bark it will also add nutrients to the soil as it breaks down!

Wondering how much mulch you need? Mulch is measured in cubic yards so you'll need to do a little calculating. First, figure out the square footage of your gardens. Do this by measuring the length by the width.

Then you need to know how deep. Most mulch is piled between one and two inches. So multiply the square footage by the depth and then divide that number by 324 to convert it to cubic yards.

Before you lay down your mulch, lay a thick layer of newspaper over the ground, it will keep weeds in check and decompise over time adding nutrients to the soil.

Muclhing know how to help you! I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple.
