Call for cancer warnings on hot dogs

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - July 22, 2009 The Cancer Project, an offshoot of a pro-vegetarian organization, wants to force hot dog makers to use warning labels. The organization filed a lawsuit Wednesday in New Jersey.

It names Kraft Foods Inc., manufacturer of the Oscar Mayer brand; Sara Lee Corp.; Nathan's Famous; and the makers of the Hebrew National and Sabrett brands.

The lawsuit cites a report by the American Institute for Cancer Research that concluded regular consumption of processed meat can increase the risk of colorectal and other forms of cancer.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, an industry group, says many other studies contradict those findings.
