$1.6 million in heroin seized in Phila.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - September 1, 2009 It began around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday when state police troopers saw two vehicles commit traffic violations on Packer Avenue near 18th Street in South Philadelphia.

The vehicles were stopped, and troopers got consent to conduct a search.

In the one of the vehicles, an SUV driven by Mark Smith of Arizona, police say they found five kilograms of heroin with a street value of $1.6 million.

Smith, and another man in the vehicle who is identified as John Jackson also of Arizona, were arrested and charged with a number of drug violations.

Police found a small amount of marijuana in the other vehicle, a Chevrolet SUV driven by Kyle Johnson of Philadelphia. He was also charged.

Police believe the two vehicles were travelling together.
