Police: Bank tellers stole $100,000

SWARTHMORE - January 11, 2010 Officials say the women made the thefts during the past several months in Delaware Count.

About $20,000 of the stolen money was in coin form, according to officials.

Police say when the three bank tellers needed money, they just went to their friend "Todd" for easy cash. Turns out "Todd" was the bank's ATM machine and the tellers are now paying a steep price.

Investigators say Jean Marie Moronese of Folcroft was the ring leader. She was the head teller at the First Keystone Bank in Swarthmore. She allegedly took money from the ATM machine, and then falsified computer records. Moronese allegedly confided in two other tellers.

But, instead of turning her in, police say Kelly Barksdale and Tyneesha Richardson, covered for Moronese and took money themselves.

"You can either be a witness, or you can be a defendant. These two chose to be defendants," Delaware County D.A. Mike Green said in a news conference Monday.

In all, investigators say the three tellers took over $100,000 from the bank ATM. They also are accused of taking more than $23,000 of parking meter money from the borough of Swarthmore.

The police were puzzled by a mysterious drop in parking meter revenue and were relieved when they found out where it had been going.

So, far police haven't recovered any of the money. It was used to pay off credit cards, rent, car loans and for random shopping sprees.

Investigators say it was a low-tech theft operation that could easily have been detected if the bank supervisors had followed their own internal safeguards.

The three tellers turned themselves in to police this morning. Barksdale and Richardson are free on $15,000 bail each without having to post ten percent. The alleged ring leader, Moronese was sent to jail after failing to post 10% of $35,000 bail.
