Philly snow removal moves to Phase 2

PHILADELPHIA - February 17, 2010

Mayor Michael Nutter has announced that the city has moved into the second phase of snow removal efforts. The first phase dealt primarily with removing the more than 40 inches of snow from City streets and making the majority of roads passable. Efforts starting tomorrow and extending through Sunday will focus on removing ice from roads, widening lanes to improve traffic flow, and digging out the remaining unplowed streets.

In order to be able to clear the streets appropriately, the City will relocate (without ticketing) illegally parked cars that either block access to a street or prevent the Streets Department from being able to fully widen travel lanes. Cars that are parked diagonally in unauthorized areas or parked more than a foot from the curb will also be moved.

"After a record 45 inches of snow the City has managed to make the majority of roads passable in very short order, this second phase of snow removal will make it safer and easier to navigate the City on big and small streets alike," said Mayor Nutter. "I thank the residents of Philadelphia for their patience while we all continue to deal with the effects of these historic storms."

These efforts will run citywide from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Residents who parked illegally should call 215-685-9134 to locate their car. To find out more about the snow removal efforts, please call 311.

Citizens are asked to do the following:
Do not park diagonally where it is not legally permitted.
Do not park close to the corner so that plows can turn.
