New Castle pedestrian struck and killed identified

NEW CASTLE, Del. - March 11, 2010 Delaware State Police have identified Joseph J Kearney, 52, as the man killed in Sunday night's fatal crash. Kearney was identified through fingerprint records from the FBI. Kearney did not have a permanent address.

Police say a Nissan was traveling on Rt 13 southbound in the far right lane approaching Rt 273. Kearney was walking on the east side of Rt 13 traveling southbound.

For an unknown reason, he attempted to cross southbound Rt 13 from east to west. Kearney stepped directly into the path of Rt 13 southbound traffic. The Nissan was unable to avoid the collision and struck Kearney as he crossed the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by emergency personnel.

A 19-year-old male and a 20-year-old male were both passengers in the Nissan Maxima during the time of the accident. No one in the Nissan Maxima was injured and all occupants were properly restrained.
