Mrs. Fixit: Kitchen Improv

April 24, 2010

If you love those ooegy gooey panninis that you get in your favorite sandwich shop, you can make them at home with a tabletop grill.

Prep the sandwich like you're making a grilled cheese sandwich but instead of butter, brush some oil on the outside slices of the bread, and then place it inside a pre-heated grill. The heat will press the sandwich and melt the cheese in one quick step.

No tabletop grill? Try a grill pan with a heavy pot on top to press it down or even a waffle iron would work in a pinch.

Have a salad spinner? Once you've cleaned your greens and used what you want, store the additional greens right in the spinner in your fridge, the meshy insert will allow air to circulate around the greens and keep them fresher - longer.

If you're cutting fresh fruit for a salad and don't have any fresh lemons to keep them from browning, pour a little lemon-lime soda over them. The same citric acid will keep them from browning.

Need a place to set a hot pot? invert a rimmed baking sheet. The pocket of air under the sheet will keep the pot from scorching the countertop.

A little improv in the kitchen goes a long way! I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
