Students hospitalized in Overbrook bus crash

OVERBROOK - April 27, 2010

It happened at 63rd Street and Malvern Avenue just before 8:00 a.m.

The driver, Joe Rasheen, tells Action News that he was crossing the intersection, when a driver veered across, and swiped the back end of the bus.

Rasheen said, "I was coming down Malvern on my way to pick up my last kid [when] a guy ran a light and hit the back of the bus and I went head on into a tree."

Lisa Barnes, a parent of one of the students on the bus, tells us, "From what [police] tell me, five children are okay, and the bus driver was okay. So I'm thanking God for that. So I'm heading to Chop to see how he's doing."

The five students on the bus were headed to William Levering Magnet School in Roxborough. All of them are being checked out at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The driver says he has a sore knee, but is otherwise okay.
