Calhoun St. Bridge project begins Monday

TRENTON - May 19, 2010

At 6:00 a.m. Monday, the bridge is shutting down for a $10-million repair project.

Joe Donnelly of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission says, "There are elements on the bridge that over time wear down, wear out, rust out and need replacement."

Improvements will be made to the bridge's superstructure, decking, walkways, lighting and it'll get a fresh coat of paint. Work is already under way with the installment of a containment shield underneath the bridge to keep debris out of the Delaware River below.

"It's going to be very inconvenient, but I think it's necessary. I mean that bridge is old," Claire Raccosta of Yardley, Pa.

If you were 126 years old you might need a facelift, too!

This job will take months. The bridge is expected to be closed throughout the summer and won't reopen until the end of September.

"Horrible! Horrible! For 4 months? Lord in heaven," Sat Fiorello of Yardley said.

"I'll have to use 95 or Route 1 so it's a little out of the way, but I'll make do," Kevin Heltzel of Langhorne, Pa. said.

The Calhoun Street Bridge will also be off limits to the many who walk or jog across the span. Businesses on the Pennsylvania side hope customers will keep coming during the shutdown.

"I'm concerned a little bit, of course, you know, everything is going to make the difference with the business," Maurizio Duvoli, manager of Café Antonio, said.

"It's a necessity so we need to get it done. It's like a lot of things. You don't really like it, but when it's done you love it," Jettie Thomas of Trenton said.

Remember, the bridge shuts down Monday morning 6:00 a.m.
