Microchip helps NY family find dog gone since '06

LLOYD HARBOR, N.Y. - June 4, 2010

The fluffy dog is named Cooper. He was dropped off about a month ago at an animal shelter in Islip (EYE'-slihp), 35 miles east of New York City. He'd been found on a street in Brentwood, about 15 miles from his home in Lloyd Harbor. He'd been reported missing in 2006.

Shelter supervisor Joanne Daly says a scanner located a microchip ID under Cooper's skin.

Cooper's breed is called coton de Tulear (KAH'-tuhn du TOO'-lur). Except for matted hair, he was in good condition.

Owner Gwynne Wicks tells the Newsday newspaper Cooper is "very happy to be home."
