Make your own Homestyle Sloppy Joes from scratch in the same time it would take to start with a store-bought Sloppy Joe mix, and reap the fresh-tasting rewards.

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 to 2-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium-sized onion, chopped
  • 1 medium-sized green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 sandwich or hamburger buns, split

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper over medium-high heat for 7 to 9 minutes; drain off excess liquid.
  2. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Reduce heat to low and simmer 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over buns.

Note

For extra zing, add 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce.
