The main burst open at about 5:15 on Thursday morning at the intersection of 54th Street and Whitby Avenue.
Water shot more than 25 feet into the air.
And a lot of that water began to quickly turn to ice in the freezing temperatures.
Police called for a city salt truck to treat the street.
Officers blocked off the street and waited for Philadelphia Water Department crews to get to the scene.
Water department crews were seen at the intersection at about 6:15.
So far, the water has not been cut off.
There's no word on whether anyone in the neighborhood has lost their drinking water.
