North Phila. teen making a smash in tennis

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - May 27, 2011

Joe DiMaggio, Cal Ripken, Brett Favre, all have some of the greatest streaks in sports history.

But DaSean Fennell's streak is not too bad either.

The Roman Catholic senior has never lost a tennis match in his school career. He is 61-0 going into Friday's state finals.

"I don't really think about it that much, but I think once I have graduated and gotten through the whole high school thing and look back, I'll say 'yeah, that was a pretty good streak,'" says DaSean.

It is an incredible streak, and what is even more remarkable, Fennell is not a tennis prodigy who has been training at a prestigious tennis academy in Florida. He is from North Philadelphia, not exactly a hot bed for tennis.

"I do walk home late at night with a big bag of clothes and rackets, and people probably look at me like, 'where is he going?'", says DaSean.

"It's very rare, even though you do have a lot of talented kids that just aren't exposed to the sport," said Chad Hamilton, Fennell's coach.

Nine years ago, he didn't even know what tennis was until his mother got him involved with the sport to keep him busy in the summer.

Fennell says he will never forget the first time he stepped foot onto a court.

"It was weird, a lot of kids; not many black people. It was very weird. I was like, 'what am I doing here?'" DaSean said.

But he has proven that he belongs on the court and then some.

The 18 year old is taking his game to the next level. He recently signed a letter of intent to play at LaSalle.
