Animals killed in NJ trailer fire; homeless woman charged

PEDRICKTOWN, N.J. - January 4, 2012

It happened Tuesday in Pedricktown, N.J.

Police tell Action News that 60-year-old Brenda Rhodes has no permanent address.

They say she was keeping nearly two dozen animals in a trailer in the unit block of New Road.

The trailer caught fire at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Twenty animals, including at least twelve cats, were killed in the blaze.

Police say Rhodes was not at the trailer when the fire broke out. She was later arrested and will be charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty.

This is not the first animal cruelty incident involving Rhodes. She faced animal cruelty and related charges back in 2008 after dozens of animals were removed from what authorities called a "House of Horrors" in Vineland, N.J.

Police and the SPCA are still trying to determine what caused Tuesday's fire.
