Alaska town seeks shovels, braces for latest storm

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - January 10, 2012

A spokesman for the city of Cordova says the community is looking for sturdy snow shovels and snow scoops as it braces for another storm.

Nearly 15 feet of snow has dumped on the community of 2,200 about 150 miles southeast of Anchorage, and a blizzard warning was in effect Tuesday.

City spokesman Allen Marquette says if any state should have stockpiles of shovels, it should be Alaska. But he says the city has contacted stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks and other cities and has not been able to find a stash.

The city is working with a manufacturer to bring shovels north from another state.
