It happened last month in Delaware County.
It was December 1st around 11:30pm. The victim was traveling along Baltimore Pike when another vehicle was traveling at high rate of speed in the opposite direction. Someone in that car threw a pumpkin out the window causing it to crash through the victim's windshield.
"It looked like someone took a pumpkin and exploded it in his car," said Sgt. Michael Montgomery. "I just can't believe he wasn't killed."
The impact on the windshield blinded the driver, who couldn't open his eyes from all of the shattered glass imbedded in his face, but still managed to his car pull over.
Police say he was dazed and stunned by the exploding pumpkin.
"In my 19 years experience, I've seen a lot of strange things, but I've never seen something that large, a pumpkin, thrown through a window," said Sgt. Montgomery.
Delaware County authorities believe the suspects involved in the assault are also responsible for at least three other acts of vandalism in Middletown Township and other nearby municipalities, including a Partyland van, where the back window was blown out. The force of the pumpkin also damaged the front dashboard.
"I was shocked," said Jen Wenitsky of Partyland. "I couldn't believe it; couldn't believe it."
Jan Wenitsky's insurance will cover the damage, but she is out a $500 deductible.
Police say the victim who was actually struck by the pumpkin suffered a serious eye injury.
Investigators have no suspects.
A Good Samaritan pulled over and helped the injured victim, but left before detectives could interview him. They are hoping he will come forward.
"We'd like him to contact us," said Sgt. Montgomery. "Maybe he can shed more light on this."
"People are just out of control; really out of control," said Wenitsky.
Attempts to contact the victim were unsuccessful. Police say he does not want to comment, but we are told the injuries to his eyes have affected his work as a computer programmer.
