Police continue search for NJ serial rapist

CAMDEN - February 14, 2012

There is a very large police presence now.

The first rape happened back in early December and that has many wondering why it took this long for police to beef up patrols and get the word out that young girls were being sexually assaulted after school.

Farnham Park is a popular hangout for Camden High students after school.

Today, students were met by a noticeable police presence in the park, but many here today felt it was too little too late.

"Yesterday was the first time I really seen all the cops around here," 10th grader Alexis Butler said.

"Something should have been done sooner about this," 11th grader Indonesia Thomas said.

Since early December, four young girls have been raped in the park, right next to Camden High.

Three of the victims have been minors and police believe the suspect is targeting his victims after school.

The rapes have happened between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

In each case, the suspect has threatened the victims with a gun or a knife. Yet, students told Action News they only found about the attacks by word of mouth.

"The teachers and the kids talked about it amongst themselves, but nobody said 'maybe we should notify parents of what's going on,'" Butler said.

"Two weeks ago, a friend of mine told me don't walk there cause I was at afterschool activities. She said don't walk down there cause a little girl got raped the other day," Thomas said.

Action News interviewed the mother of that 16-year-old victim. Saturday afternoon, she became the suspect's fourth victim, weeks after the first victim was attacked.

"I thank God this guy didn't kill my daughter," the mother said.

The police chief talked with Action News yesterday about efforts to catch the suspect.

"We are going to beef patrols in that area, we are doing sweeps in the park with our K9 officers and we are asking the public to be circumspect and report any suspicious activity," Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson said.

Our calls to city officials and the chief of police today were not returned. Action News was told the Superintendent of Camden Schools was in meetings and not available to answer our calls.
