Exclusive: Teen hits intruder with glass

MIDDLETOWN TWP., Pa. - March 13, 2012

Step by step, the 15-year-old Middletown girl, who we're not identifying, told only Action News how she fought off a burglar who attacked her inside her home on the 1600 block of Highland Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

"I was just so in shock. I didn't know what to do and he like started hitting me and I was just like thinking 'oh, I'm going to die,'" the teen said.

The victim, who was home alone around 1:00 p.m., walked downstairs to get a drink when a man surprised her as she rounded the corner and pulled her by her hair.

Middletown police believe it was a crime of opportunity since the front door was unlocked and the burglar most likely thought no one was home.

The two struggled on the dining room floor as the man choked the girl.

She was able to reach her drinking glass and hit him over the head a couple of times before it shattered.

"I just did what I had to do, I guess, to get away," the teen said.

The teenager broke free and ran to the bathroom where she barricaded the door, huddled into a corner and called 911.

"It seemed like it was forever and I couldn't believe what happened," the victim said.

The teen's attacker took off.

Police only have a vague description of the man who, despite the warmth of the day, was wearing a brown leather jacket and gloves.

The upset victim spoke because she wants to help police find the man.

Her mother was amazed by her actions.

"I think that was a very courageous thing to do; I think that shows a lot of strength. I'm just very proud that she had done that because if she didn't, I don't know what else could have possibly happened to her," the mother said.

The young victim suffered injuries to her neck and face.

She was checked out at St. Mary Medical Center.

The police department says if anyone saw anything in the area of Highland Avenue around 1:00 p.m. to give them a call.
