More trouble for owners of Kensington factory

PHILADELPHIA - April 19, 2012

L & I has slapped three citations on a building on the 700 block of Market Street.

It has been an eyesore for years, and the now notorious owners have 35 days to fix it up.

The Lichtenstein brothers of Brooklyn, New York own the building. Their real estate holdings in Philadelphia came under scrutiny after two Philadelphia firefighters died in a raging blaze last week at a vacant factory in Kensington owned by the Lichtensteins.

The building had been cited for numerous safety violations and the city had been in the process of taking it to sheriff's sale.

Neighbors had complained for months that it was unsecured and that trespassers might cause a fire.

Last Monday, the blazing building collapsed on four firefighters, killing two of them.

The city is now re-inspecting all 31 buildings owned by the Lichtensteins.

The Thomas Lofts on Market Street were supposed to be 48 luxury condominiums. Only half the project is finished and it is now in receivership.

A federal judge appointed former U.S. Senator Arlen Spector as receiver.

The Lichtensteins also owe almost $280,000 in back taxes on the building.

Wednesday L & I cited the owners for leaving the facade in an unfinished and crumbling state.

And it has been cited for failing to keep fire alarm records and for not getting a housing inspection license.

The three citations were posted on the building on Wednesday, but only one is left.

A tenant says he saw a man pulling down the other two.

The Lichtensteins now have 35 days to take care of the violations or face fines of up to $300 a day.

But that may be the least of their worries. A federal grand jury is now looking into possible criminal charges after the fatal factory fire.
