Mayor Nutter kicks off Philly Beer Week

PHILADELPHIA - June 1, 2012

With the mayoral tap of a keg of "Brotherly Suds", Beer Week was underway.

Beer Week kicked off at Independence Visitor's Center Friday night and the place was packed with people and plenty of samples from the region's top breweries.

"Philadelphia is actually the leader with this type of model and others have copied us," said Frank Altadona. "We're kind of famous for this."

Over the next 10 days, people will be able to enjoy an array of beer events at more than 230 bars and restaurants.

"I came looking for a specific beer and found it, and I was really shocked. It was a mango ginger beer from Box Car Brewery," said Jamie Madden.

Some of the beer lovers got a little fancy for the kick-off.

"We're here for a bachelor party," said Nathan Evans. "It's a great place to come."

When it comes to Philly Beer Week, there are a lot of returning vendors, but there is also an amazing opportunity for the new kids on the block like Free Will Brewing Company.

He Bucks County Company has been in business since January, but this is their big and taste ready debut.

Jamie Madden had one piece of advice about taking part in Philly Beer Week.

"Go out and try something you've never had. There are a million places in Philadelphia to try them and you'll love them all," said Jamie.
