Wilmington residents rally against gun violence

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - June 16, 2012

More than 40 people marched to police headquarters on Friday to issue a list of demands to Police Chief Michael Szczerba.

The demands include meeting with residents, assigning more patrol officers to certain neighborhoods and placing at least two community members on a gun task force. Relatives of some homicide victims spoke at the rally.

The city has had 12 homicides this year. The rally came a day after Gov. Jack Markell visited sites of recent killings.

Szczerba says he's willing to meet with the community and discuss their ideas, but that this was the first he had heard of their demands.

Mayor James Baker says he's concerned by the violence.
