Long sentences in home invasion rapes

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - January 15, 2008

Saying that the public needed to be protected from the men, Common Pleas Judge Leon Tucker on Monday sent Labrente Robinson, 29, and Jacoby Robinson, 21, to prison for what likely will be the rest of their lives.

The Robinsons, cousins who lived in Wilmington, Del., traveled to Philadelphia in the early morning of July 15, 2006, with a third man, Phillip Price, with the intention of robbing someone.

The men followed a Cadillac from a nightclub as the couple inside - one of the victims, then a 21-year-old Temple University student, and her boyfriend - drove to the home she shared with the other female victim, then 25, in the city's Port Richmond neighborhood.

Price left after dropping off the Robinsons, who entered the women's home at gunpoint.

Jacoby Robinson pistol-whipped the boyfriend and stomped on his head.

"I'm just happy that justice was served," the boyfriend said outside court on Monday.

The older roommate, who had been sleeping in the house at the time, told the judge before he imposed the sentences that being raped by both men and unable to help her roommate has "affected me in every aspect of my life."

The younger woman, who was raped by Labrente Robinson, told them in court: "I hope that you guys pay for it."

Labrente Robinson looked downward as the victims and their families spoke. Jacoby Robinson looked at them with no emotion.

"You can see in his eyes, there's nothing there ... He's a horrible monster," Scott Friedenreich, a Delaware probation and parole officer who previously had supervised Jacoby Robinson, told the judge.

Jacoby Robinson was convicted by a jury of rape, robbery and related charges. In a rambling statement before sentencing, he denied participating in the rapes.

"I never did anything to anybody," he said.

Labrente Robinson, who pleaded guilty to the crimes in June, briefly apologized to the victims.

The judge sentenced Labrente Robinson to at least 90 years in state prison and Jacoby Robinson to at least 87½ years. According to testimony from Jacoby Robinson's trial, Labrente had raped both women and Jacoby raped one woman.

The two men left the women's home with cash and the Cadillac.

Price, 22, of Salisbury, Md., was sentenced in June to at least six years in prison after pleading guilty to carjacking, robbery and conspiracy.
