Deputy Mayor and Health Commissioner Dr. Donald Schwarz named Dr. Sam Gulino as Philadelphia's new chief medical examiner.
Dr. Gulino comes from Tampa, Florida, where he was Deputy Chief Medical Examiner for Hillsborough County. He has also served in coroner's and medical examiner's offices in Miami, Florida; Kansas City, Missouri; and Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Gulino will take the post in mid-April.
He told Action News that in addition to crime, he'll make preventable causes of death, such as child abuse and falls, top priorities. "The data is there. It is our job now to interpret the data, to deliver some powerful public health messages."
Dr. Gulino says he doesn't mind the glamourization of medical examiners in various TV crime shows and novels, if it opens the door for him to deliver those messages.
Check out Action News this weekend for more on Dr. Gulino, and plans by Dr. Schwarz to reshape the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
