Woman, 89, killed in house fire

February 28, 2008 The flames broke out in the 15-hundred block of South 22nd Street around 12:30 Thursday afternoon.

The fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes.

Fire fighters found the woman dead in a bedroom.

The woman was confined to a bed. Her adult nephew had stopped by the house, apparently to check on his aunt. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

No names have been released.

Investigators say the fire was caused by electric wiring.

The home did have working smoke alarms.

Fatal fires have accounted for 7 deaths this year to date. There were 20 fire fatalities at this same time last year.
