A man charged with assaulting his son's Pop Warner football coach could avoid going to jail under the terms of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Mario A. Romano pleaded guilty on Thursday to assault.

The 42-year-old Colts Neck dad is accused of knocking coach Peter Vanruitenbeek unconscious.

Police say during the game, Romano had a dispute with Vanruitenbeek regarding the amount of playing time Romano's son was given at quarterback. After the game, Romano punched Vanruitenbeek in the face, sending him to the hospital.

Romano, who was an official in the Pop Warner football league, cannot coach any school or athletic events as a condition of his plea.
