Police seek truck that killed woman

PHILADELPHIA - April 24, 2008 "I just saw the truck go by. Once he passed my view, I saw the body on the ground and dialed 911," said one witness.

She was one of several people who witnessed the deadly accident at Cheltenham and Bustleton avenues in Northeast Philadelphia.

A red container truck hit a woman standing at the intersection just before 9:30 this morning.

John Bell was two cars behind the truck as it turned off of Cheltenham onto Bustleton. He too saw the tragedy unfold.

"Immediately, I knew she was dead. I could just see it in her face," said Bell.

The woman, in her late 30's, was declared dead at the scene. The driver kept going.

Police stopped several dumpster hauling container trucks fitting the description of the one involved in the accident, but did not find the one involved in the crash.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld until her family is notified, may have been run over by the truck's rear tires.

"I don't think he realized that he hit her. I really don't," said Bell. "He just proceeded like nothing ever happened. Not like he tried to speed away or nothing like that. He just drove away normally."

Once police locate the truck, the decision to press charges depends on whether it appears the driver was aware that he hit someone and whether the victim was on the curb or had stepped into the street.
