Is there such a thing as a safe thunderstorm?

Dateline article| David Murphy|

No. Since all thunderstorms produce lightning, even small thunderstorms that do not feature strong winds or hail are still potentially deadly. Whenever you hear thunder or sense an approaching storm, it's important to take cover immediately. The best place is indoors. If you must take cover in a car, avoid convertibles and make sure there are no trees or wires above that could be blown down on top of the car by the passing storm. A car is not a safe place during a severe thunderstorm, because it can be destroyed by a tornado, or damaged by flying debris.
