Briere encouraged by surgery results

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - January 23, 2009 Briere said he was encouraged following Thursday's surgery to free an entrapped nerve in his groin, even though he won't be able to return to action for a month.

"It looks like that's the way it should heal," Briere said Friday. "The doctor was very positive yesterday and I'm positive to get some answers."

If Briere can get healthy, he could provide an offensive boost for the Flyers, who are two points behind the Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey Devils at the All-Star break.

"I'm pretty sure I'll be back and ready to play," Briere said.

Briere has played only nine games this season and missed the last 22 with the injury. He had surgery in late October to repair a torn abdominal muscle and then injured his groin on Dec. 2.

Last week, Briere appeared to be headed back to the lineup after he recorded a goal and four assists in a three-game rehab stint with the Flyers' AHL affiliate. But he elected to have surgery when the discomfort did not go away.

Briere has five goals and four assists for the Flyers this season. Last year, he had 31 goals and 41 assists.
