Military auction scam

April 7, 2009 Officials allege that Marchetti convinced victims to give him money to purchase items at an auction, limited to those with military backgrounds.

Investigators from the Special Investigations Unit of the Prosecutor's Office have identified six victims with losses in excess of $500-thousand. Officials say Marchetti used the money for other purposes.

Anyone with any information about Marchetti or who may have given money to him for the purchase of items at auction should contact Investigator Thomas Tiernan of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at 732-929-2027 x 3149.

Marchetti is charged with 2nd degree theft by deception. His bail was set at $75-thousand. He is being held at the Ocean County Jail.
