Car hits 6-year-old, drives off

WEST OAK LANE - May 10, 2009 At approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, a 6-year-old boy was hit by a car on the 7800 block of Provident Road in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.

Witnesses say the driver of the vehicle that hit the boy stopped for a moment and then drove off.

Action News spoke to the boy's mother late Sunday night.

She said her son is in stable condition and on a ventilator since being taken to St. Christopher's Hospital. He suffered a fractured arm and has some head trauma.

The boy was visiting friends and relatives for a picnic.

Police are looking for a forest green Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Marquis and may have possible faded paint on the trunk and may also have damage to the front end.

Residents say cars often speed down the road and they've had enough.

The mother believes that someone on the block knows who the driver is and hopes they will come forward with a name.

The boy's father is a Philadelphia police officer.
