"We're upset, they should be upset, this is an innocent elderly male victim," Cpl. Trinidad Navarro of the New Castle County Police said.
Investigators went to the gated apartment complex called Christiana Meadows today where a 75-year-old man apparently thought it was safe to regularly take early morning or late night strolls.
At around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, two men assaulted the senior citizen.
"They may have been looking to just rob him, but it may turn out to be much worse than that," Navarro said.
That's why police want to hear from anyone who spotted a late 80's model grey or blue colored sedan that was seen speeding away from the property moments after two strange men were seen at the complex.
"One of the two men brandished a handgun and told the victim to relinquish his valuables. Well, the victim was out for a walk so he had nothing valuable on him, so these two individuals assaulted our victim and fled on foot empty-handed," Navarro said.
These investigators also want to know if the suspects are linked to four other armed robberies that occurred last Saturday, all within 70 minutes of each other. The William Penn Village apartment complex was among the locations, the others, Penn Acres South, Hampton Walk Apartments, and Castle Hills.
A sketch of one of the suspects has been released.
"The only thing I can tell you for sure is the suspect descriptions are similar in that it's a white male and a black male. Now whether or not they're all related, we really don't know," Navarro said.
The family of the 75-year-old victim is reportedly traveling from Ohio to be by his side.
Meanwhile, police hope the public will call in with tips that could help crack the case.
