36-year-old Kouakou Jacques worked for Accu Pizza at 48th and Spruce streets. At around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, he was about to deliver a pizza to a home on the 4100 block of Aspen Street, but once there, the people inside said they had not ordered one.
"He was approached by an individual or individuals. At least one of them, we know had a gun, shot him one time in the chest, he went down. We know some of the money he had was taken from him and they fled on foot," Captain James Clark of the Philadelphia Police said.
Jacques was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Jacques, an immigrant from West Africa, lived on Larchwood Avenue in Upper Darby with his fiancée.
Residents say he was hardworking and a good neighbor.
"I know him since he moved in here, very nice guy, always said hello to the kids," neighbor Doug Ingling said.
The owner of Accu Pizza had no comment today but Vins Lee who also delivers pizza says it can be a dangerous job.
Police say the call for the pizza came from a pay phone at 41 and Lancaster and have searched the business district for surveillance video.
Police will be examining any surveillance video in hopes of spotting the people who made the call. Meanwhile, if anyone can provide information they should call homicide detectives at 215-686-3334.
