NJ scales back gypsy moth spraying

TRENTON, N.J. - January 29, 2010

The state Agriculture Department says aerial spraying will cover a 99-acre tract in Mullica in Atlantic County.

Last year, the state sprayed almost 36,000 acres in 15 counties.

Previous spraying has taken a toll on the caterpillars. Gypsy moths also are falling victim to predatory parasites and a fungus.

State Agriculture Secretary Douglas Fisher says monitoring will continue because the damaging moths were found in scattered pockets elsewhere in the state.
