No charges after principal struck student

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - February 8, 2010

Prosecutors in Bucks County say the Pennridge North Middle School principal could not avoid 15-year-old Ricardo Smith as he crossed in front of her.

They believe 66-year-old Margaret Kantes had a green light and was driving at about 17 to 22 miles per hour.

Investigators say Smith had dark clothes on and may have been listening to music.

Smith's family filed a lawsuit over the Jan. 4 accident that accuses Kantes of speeding and perhaps running a red light.

Smith, now 16, is recovering from head, spinal, and other injuries. He was walking to Pennridge High School in Perkasie, about 30 miles north of Philadelphia.
