Breakneck pace for summer shore rentals

OCEAN CITY, N.J. - February 15, 2010

On this long holiday weekend, the shore is a popular place as people look for that perfect summer rental.

When the boardwalk has piles of snow taller than you are, it's hard to believe summer is coming. But renters know the clock is ticking and that's why they're spending part of their long weekend slogging through the snow looking for the perfect place to hang their beach towels this summer. Charlie Cooper of Roxborough told Action News, " I'd like to have all my family with me so we need a 5 bedroom."

"I've been online, put a lot of time in looking for a place but no, I did not expect to be trudging through snow looking. Haha," laughed Kathleen Lewis of Roxborough.

Berger Realty in Ocean City -- which holds the keys to over 2,000 rental properties -- says last year was their best year ever and they're beating those numbers already. It may still be a result of the bad economy.

" I think that's been keeping them more local and they're reminded, 'You know what? We can stay closer and spend a little less money than traveling,'" rental manager Deedra Bowen told Action News.

So agents have been busy signing contracts and showing properties.

"We do this for the kids," said Linda Roesener of Sellersville, Pa. "The grandchildren. We can't disappoint them."

Joanna Gianaris of Bridgeton and her niece were checking out a place on Asbury Ave. She's the single mom of 4-year-old twins and has been working 2 jobs and saving for her vacation.

"I'm excited," Gianaris, a Bridgeton native said. "I'm just looking for something for us to relax, not too far away from the beach."

Rentals range anywhere from $1,000 a week up to $10,000 or $15,000 for the really swanky places. But realtors say don't expect to bargain -- there are still too many properties availabkle and it's too early in the season.

By summer it'll be sand you're trudging through, not snow!
