Pint-size chess players need your help

WILMINGTON, Del. - April 16, 2010

These six-year-olds are playing a game many adults can't master....and they like it!

The youngsters play for the "Chess Masters of Delaware" chess club.  The club's made up of kids in grades K-through-12, from different schools in New Castle County.

Coach Greg Rogers is prepping them for next month's national competition in Atlanta.

"Last year we went to the nationals and came in 17th in the country," Rogers said. "We have three kindergartners this year who are participating in the tournament and I couldn't be happier about that."

Rogers taught many of these students from scratch.  He says playing will help them in all aspects of their lives.

"The program really teaches kids how to strategize and it builds their self esteem," he said. "It's about enhancing their minds so, therefore, better decisions are made in life."

10-year-old Lennox has taken all that in and, when he plays, his mind is on just one thing.

"I'm thinking that I can beat this person and I don't doubt myself," he said.

Right now, the hardest part for Coach Rogers is getting more players to Atlanta.  Only seven of these players will be going because of the lack of funding. It's up to each parent to pay their child's way.

"With some help, we can raise those numbers and hopefully bring a national championship back to Delaware. I don't think it's beyond our reach," said the coach.
