Abington student named Great American Hero

ABINGTON, Pa. - April 28, 2010

The Abington High School junior was honored by Great American Opportunities, a national fundraising company that urges students to be a hero and make a difference.

In Vidhu's case, it was his work with H2O for Life.

H2O for Life is a Minnesota based organization that works to bring clean water to impoverished places.

"Countries in Africa, or India, or even Nicaragua, where we're going this year, there's like millions of children dying each year from this and no one cares," Nath said.

The H2O for Life club at Abington High School has raised $17,000 to fund projects including a well in Africa and water catchment system in India.

"The kids got sinks for hand washing; they started a hygiene club and they also got latrines for their school for 500 kids. Now, their disease rate has dropped by 50-percent," Mary Rogers, the H2O for Life club sponsor at Abington, said.

There are about 40 Abington High students that are active in H2O for Life, which this year is raising money for latrines and a washhouse in Nicaragua.

"It's just amazing to know that you're a part of something," H2O for Life member Emily Crossette said.

"This is such a great accomplishment we have going on for us; it will definitely help a lot of people, so I'm definitely happy about this," Nath said.

Vidhu is very happy to have been honored and is anxious to donate the $500 check to H20 for Life.
