Pa. lawyer gets 6-1/2 years in tax, charity fraud

PHILADELPHIA - May 5, 2010

Sixty-year-old John Karoly is well-known in the Lehigh Valley after winning more than $10 million for clients in police-abuse lawsuits. Character witnesses say he also gave time and money to youth sports and other causes.

But a sister involved in a family feud over their brother's estate says Karoly thought he was above the law.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence Stengel says Karoly lied under oath. He says that "shocks the conscience" for a lawyer.

Karoly admitted he failed to report $4.2 million in income over several tax years. Stengel convicted him at trial of charges stemming from the charity scheme.
