Taxpayers will pay for Pa. prison toilet troubles

LANCASTER, Pa. - June 10, 2010

The remedy is going to cost county taxpayers as much as $225,000.

The county commissioners on Wednesday approved officials the funds to modify the sewer system at the prison to extract "non-sanitary waste" before it reaches Lancaster's sewer system.

Officials say inmates flush everything from towels to sneakers down toilets. That messes up motors and grinders within the city's sewage treatment system.

The county plans to install a large filter in the prison's sewer main to catch debris that shouldn't be there. The modifications should be completed this year.
