Rise in break-ins in NE Philadelphia

No neighborhood is completely immune from burglaries, but Philadelphia police say they have seen a significant uptick in the number of break-ins in the Greater Northeast.

Philadelphia Police Lt. Mark Burgmann says the specific targeted areas are in the 7th and 8th police districts stretching from Rhawn Street to the Montgomery and Bucks County city limits.

Most of the crimes take place in the daytime when people are at work, but there have also been nighttime break-ins while residents are home.

"We are getting them also so a lot of times the complainants are confronting the burglars while they're in the act," Burgmann said.

No one has been hurt in the break-ins.

Burgmann says there have been a few arrests.

The bandits take everything from to jewelry, cash, and electronics to tools from sheds.

Police urge residents to be vigilant not only about locking doors and windows, but in reporting any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
