A 42-year-old Delaware mother is charged with child abuse after striking her 9-year-old boy with an extension cord because he took a check from her checkbook to buy a book at a school book fair.

New Castle County Police say Serena Wardlaw of Wilmington was charged Friday with four counts of second-degree assault and five counts of endangering her children.

Police were called to the boy's school Friday for a report of possible child abuse. Police say they found Wardlaw had previously struck her twin daughters with the extension cord, causing the same kind of injuries.
