NY foodies lament NJ ostrich egg shortage

NEW YORK (AP) - July 5, 2011

The Wall Street Journal says local ostriches are behind on their egg-laying.

The Journal says the hens won't produce eggs without steady sunshine. That's bad news for greenmarket shoppers and restaurant-goers.

Todd Appelbaum owns Roaming Acres in Andover, N.J., the only ostrich farm in the New York City area.

He says the "picky" birds got a late start this year because of the spring weather.

Notes Appelbaum: "Ostriches can be divas."
