Man shot outside Upper Darby 'nuisance' bar

Upper Darby, Pennsylvania - July 18, 2011

Police say a fight started around 2:40 on Monday morning inside the Rhythms Sports Bar and Grill, located at Long Lane and Fairfield Avenue.

The fight spilled into the street, where about 200 people ended up gathering. That's when someone opened fire, getting off at least 11 shots.

Two of those bullets hit a man in the head.

The victim -- in his late 20s to early 30s -- was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is in extremely critical condition. Police have not released his name.

There are no reports of any other injuries, nor any word on what started the fight.

Detectives are questioning at least a half dozen people, but so far have not announced any arrests.

Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood said this bar has been a problem for a long time.

"We've been trying to close this place down for months," Chitwood said. "This is the second shooting at this location in the last year, year-and-a-half."

Chitwood added that the club has changed its name a number of times, and is only open periodically at night.

Police are looking for surveillance video in the area, to see if they can spot the gunman.
