Caring for your lawn during the heat wave

PHILADELPHIA - July 20, 2011

The scorching sun is putting stress on just about everyone and everything, including lawns.

"The bill is already high for the water," said Lynda Anthony of Rosemont. "I think it'll cost me a fortune just to water so I just let it go dry."

If you have sprinklers, experts say use them in the early morning and not during the heat of the day. However, if you're unable to do that, Jay Albrecht from Albrecht's Nursery in Narberth says to just leave the lawn alone.

"It's best to let it go dormant. if it's dry weather it'll just go to sleep and once the rains come back, it'll wake back up again."

While you might give up on the lawn right now, flowers and shrubs are the likely focus of attention. Remember to water the roots, not the growth.

"Water them when they show signs of stress," Albrecht said. "Water them just enough to keep them alive."

Landscapers from Farrelly Brothers in Ardmore were sculpting healthy trees on this property, but the lawn is another story.

"There's nothing you can do about it," said Daniel Hernandez of Farrelly Brothers. "Whether you put water or not, you're not going to see it."

Anne Ryan says her elderly father loves his garden, but the heat and poor health is keeping him from his favorite hobby.

"He loves his garden. Really, he just said this morning as I was taking him out, 'this is a disgrace, this weather is killing me' and it's killing his garden."

Getting back to the brown grass, landscapers say most of it will come back. If not, it may need some reseeding and that is a job for the fall.
