Police shoot suspect during confrontation

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - July 21, 2011

Investigators say around 3:00 a.m. Thursday two plain clothes officers were following 29-year-old Cosmo Menniti on the 2300 block of Warnock Steet as he allegedly cased cars.

One of the officers got out of the vehicle and followed Menniti on foot while the other officer circled around the block in order to have him surrounded.

When the officer in the vehicle turned the corner he heard gunshots and saw his partner in a physical altercation with Menniti. Menniti was able to disarm the officer and started firing the weapon.

The officer in the car got out and fired at Menniti, striking him in the shoulder and arm. Menniti was transported to Jefferson University Hospital and is in stable condition.

The officer involved in the fight was treated and released from Methodist Hospital for bruises and hearing issues due to the gun going off near his ear.

Police also arrested a second suspect.
