NJ man accused of having fighting birds

FLEMINGTON, N.J. - September 19, 2011

Thirty-one-year-old Elbert Valverde is held on $20,000 bail, charged with possession of fighting birds.

New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals police superintendent Frank Rizzo says cockfighting leads to gambling.

Rizzo says the birds were euthanized because they are raised to fight and can't be placed on a farm to live with other animals.
