Alumni, students rally to save Bonner, Prendie

DREXEL HILL, Pa. - January 15, 2012

It was a collective effort to try and keep the Delaware County high schools open.

"I think we have a short window of time to work as hard as we can to make this great thing happen. It is worth saving," alum Trischa Scepansky said.

"We're trying and we have a lot of heart and we want to keep the schools open," alum Regina Basile said.

Declining enrollment led the Archdiocesan Blue Ribbon Commission to recommend the closings.

But these alums and students are not going without a fight. Fundraising efforts are under way. Administration for the high schools can appeal. So far, no decision has been made.

Right now administrators are crunching numbers to determine if combining the two schools can help them remain viable.

"We have to present a comprehensive plan that includes enrollment, alumni, donations, finances, we have to take a look at the entire operation here on this campus to figure out that we can sustain it going forward," Assistant Principal for Student Affairs Jim Strandberg said.

For many families, Bonner and Prendie, as they are known, are tradition, a sort of second family.

"Just going in there, you feel like it's not just school, it's your second home," freshman Joe Callahan said.

But where do the students go from here?

"I don't know. I tell everybody I'm going to Prendie next year," freshman Reilly Pollock said.

On Sunday night, students and alumni showed up for a mass at the Cathedral Basilica in Center City.

Organizers said they wanted Archbishop Chaput to see a flood of garnet and green during the ceremony.
