School bus accident injures 6 students

RICHARDSON PARK, Del. - February 8, 2012

At 4:31 p.m., County Police and emergency personnel from the Five Points Fire Company responded to an accident involving a school bus.

When units arrived, officers learned that six children sustained minor injuries and four were being transported to the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and two were taken to the Christiana Hospital for treatment.

Police say the Honda Accord was in front of the school bus as they were both on South DuPont Road and were stopped at a light at the intersection of North Maryland Avenue.

Moments later, the car began to move before stopping suddenly, and the school bus struck the rear of the Honda, as the school bus was attempting to make a right turn.

Police learned that the school bus was filled with children from Richardson Park Elementary school and six children sustained minor injuries.

The 62-year-old male driver of the Honda Accord and the 49-year-old male school bus driver, identified as Donald Winter from New Castle, were not injured during the crash.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

Winter was issued a citation for following too close.
